Roses in the Garden

Roses are among the most diverse of plant groups and include Old Roses which are varieties mainly from the 19th century and before, and the more modern varieties from the last century till today. The majority of roses belonging to the Old Rose group are less popular because they tend to bloom only in the summer. The more modern cultivars are often repeat flowering and will provide a show for both eyes and nose for a longer period. In the UK these modern roses will provide a show of color for as long as four or five months and even longer in warmer climates. Hybrid roses which mix Old and Modern varieties are valued for their extended blooming season. English Roses and Rugosas are great examples of this.

Rose gardens have a tradition of formality, but nowadays gardeners are increasingly planting roses in less formal areas of the garden. Rose borders and mixed borders are becoming home to the once formal plant where in this new capacity the need for spraying can be eliminated or greatly reduced.

Fragrant roses had surprisingly lost favor with gardeners over the years and are now making a comeback. Many of the Old Roses offer wonderful aromatic experience while several cultivars from the Modern Roses are noted for their perfume.

Roses have an unfair reputation of being difficult to grow and care for. Roses are in fact very hardy for the most part, are reliable and easy to grow. So long as a rich soil can be maintained roses will reward you with an unmatched beauty and fragrance. Watering can also be crucial, particularly in warmer climates. Proper watering can make all the difference between an average and fantastic display. Roses do require pruning, but not all varities will require this of you. Hybrid Tea Roses require hard pruning, but most other varieties will naturally take shrubby form. Generally you will want to reduce the size of your rose plants by about one-third every year to encourage robust growth the following season.

The mystique that roses offer is well worth the effort. The grace and simple beauty combined with the instant recognition they give visitors will add to the value of your garden.
