Caring for Plants Brought Indoors - Light and Water
Wondering how you might be able to bring some of the garden indoors for the winter? It's not as simple as just digging up and bringing plants indoors. I thought I'd give a couple hints on managing this transition to indoor winter gardening regarding the two most common issues for plants being brought indoors - light and water.
The first thing to tackle is the provision of light for your plants. Many indoor environments lack sufficient light for growing plants. If your space does not provide sufficient light then you may have to consider artificial sources of light. Some plants that require only very minimal lighting include Boston ferns and of course the ubiquitous Philodendron.
Signs to look for regarding poor light conditions include pale leaves and leaves and stems that are smaller in size than normal. When it comes to watering simply make sure to water the your plants completely such that they drain out the bottom. Common issues with watering include under or over watering. Keep in mind especially in colder climates that indoor heating is likely to dry out plants rather quickly.
