Squash

A new plant page - Squash - has been added to the plant pages. This page includes the usual information about Planning, Caring for, Preparing your garden for and harvesting squash. It includes a large selection of varities you can buy and it also includes a very large list of the recipes we have that utilize your summer and winter squash varities.

Pumpkins, melons, decorative gourds and luffa - although similiar to squash in terms of cultivation requirements - are not included in this page. Look for these as seperate plant pages in the future.

The Gourd Family

Meet Mr. and Mrs. Gourd.

Mrs. Gourd comes from a long line of spaghetti and Mr. Gourd is a first generation mix of acorn and summer. Together they have cross polinated and created a monster.

What am I talking about???

We have just introduced a new section under Learn with Tables and Charts. The first table we introduce today is called The Cultivated Members of the Gourd Family which may seem like as odd topic to start this section off with, but my next Blog post will make it all clear.

Beware of mixing Cucurbitaceae, by the way.

24 Carrot Website Award

We are quite pleased to announce that Garden-Helper.com has been selected as a winner of the 24 Carrot Award for gardening websites that contain useful and entertaining gardening content, show creativity and individuality among gardening sites and provide for interactivity with site visitors through the use of forums. This award comes from the fine site http://www.gardeningtips.org

We will continue to improve upon the site and one thing worth mentioning regarding website interactivity is that we are hard at work on creating user accounts which will allow you to rate and review almost all the content within the site. Additionally, these new accounts will allow you to share more about yourself and your garden.

Square Foot Gardening

Square Foot Gardening has been around for some time and has proven itself a viable and exciting method for home growers. It has caught on with people I think for its' simplicity and lower barrier to entry into the vast world of gardening.

A new article has become available that gives a brief introduction to this method of gardening for anyone not yet familiar. The Gardening in a Square Foot article is the first in what will be a series of articles and planning tools looking into this method for growing in limited space and time.
