Cultivated for over five thousand years, Lillies are undoubtedly
one of the most beloved and treasured of all perennial garden flowers.
They are undeniably beautiful and there are over 100 varities to select
from.
Feng Shui believers hold the lily as an emblem of summer
and abundance while to the Chinese, lily means "Forever in love". Until
the 16th century the Madonna lily was the only garden variety known, because
of this the "lilies of the field" as mentioned in the bible are thought
to be this specific lily.
With the vast array of varieties available to the gardener
it is possible to create an entire lily garden with flowers of all types
and colors: from trumpet-shaped, outward-facing and upward facing to hanging
varieties that show like bells. The only color not available for liliies
is a true blue.
Lily bulbs do not tolerate drying out so if you cannot plant
your bulbs right away then be sure to store them in moist sawdust, shredded
paper or moist peat moss. Most lillies prefer a neutral to slightly acidic
soil.
Lily bulbs should be planted in holes such that the tops
of the bulbs are about 5 inches underground. Sprinkle a small bit of fertilizer
into the hole before placing the bulbs. An exception to the depth requirement
exists only for the Madonna variety which requires only an inch of depth
for planting.
Lillies flower best with sun for at least half the day.
They require a moist and humus-rich soil with good drainage. Apply a small
amount of fertilizer around shoots every spring, but do not give the lily
plants too much nitrogen-rich additives.
If your lillies grow to a hieght of over three feet they
may require staking although you will likely find the stems are incredibly
strong. As soon as buds form is the time to begin staking the plants.
Allow the plants to die off naturally rather than cutting them down after
blooming. This will ensure the bulbs have seen a full return of nutrients
from the plant before winter.
Harvest lily flowers as they bloom and just before. They
do not keep long but the certainly provide a lovely scent for any room
graced by them.
