Heather is a shrub native to northern and western Europe from Siberia to to Turkey and Morocco. The height and spread of this flowering shrub is on average about two feet. There are over 500 cultivars of Heather so this can in fact vary greatly. Leaves of the plant grow in overlapping pairs opposite one another. The leaves are dark green and often appear more like scales. Heather leaves will often turn a dark purple or red along the edges during winter so make a nice backdrop to snow-covered landscapes.

Heather plants prefer an acidic soil so be sure to test your location and be willing to raise acidity if needed. It also requires full sun and a well-drained soil.

For a more acidic soil consider additives such as elemental sulfur or gypsum (calcium sulfate). Apply sulfur at the rate of 2 to 3 pounds per 100 square feet for each unit decrease in pH desired.
